We
did so well with our 2004 predictions (well, not really), that we
decided to come back for another round of aimless thoughts and prognostication.
Some may say we are guessing, but I'd like to think of it more as..
forecasting. Nevertheless, enjoy.
Breakout
Competitor Alexis Ellis
Last
year, FitSights picked Tara Scotti as the Breakout
Competitor of 2004. And all Tara did in '04 was get her pro card,
sign with a top sponsor, have 5 bajillion photoshoots, and basically
become one of the top pros in the industry, at least with fans on
the internet. Not a bad year. Of course, we here at FitSights take
full credit for Tara's success, because we all know without the
immense amount of positive karma she recieved from last year's predicition,
none of that would have happened.
So
who get awarded with the FitSights karma for 2005? None other than
Alexis Ellis.
If
you haven't heard of Alexis Ellis it may be due to the fact that
she's only been competing for 2 years, primarily in Southern California.
But trust me, we here in SoCal can only keep a secret for so long,
and soon the whole industry will know full well of Alexis Ellis.
There
are alot of intangibles that come along with someone like Alexis.
First off is her height. At a tall 5'8", her statuesque physique
seems even more impressive. And this is no ordinary physique. Alexis
is jam packed with dense muscle - just take a gander at her back
- but still carries the size in a very feminine, very photogenic
way. Speaking of photos, she is also one of the hardest working
and best posing athletes I've ever dealt with, and it comes through
in the photos she helps to produce.
Only
training since 2000, Alexis has come a very far way in those few
years. And now, five years later in 2005, FitSights believes all
that hard work in the gym will pay off, making her the Breakout
Competitor of the year.
On
the Rise 21-and-Under Club
"Young
people are fitter to invent than to judge; fitter for execution
than for counsel; and more fit for new projects than for settled
business." - Sir Francis Bacon
With
the advent of Title IX in college sports combined with the increased
popularity of health and fitness in general, society is pumping
out a sizeable amount of athletes that have the potential to step
onto a fitness or figure stage. And now that trickle down effect
has reached the Britney-Generation as well, where tight arms and
abs are in vogue just as much as flannels and Pearl Jam t-shirts
were when I was in high school (oh man, I was born 10 years too
early..).
Leading
the charge of these 21-and-under competitors are athletes like Brittany
Thorsch, who at 19 earned her fitness pro card at last
year's USAs, and will switch to figure in 2005. There's also fellow
19 year old Moorea Wolfe, the Canadian transplant
now living in Arizona, who's advanced physique will be vying for
a pro card in 2005, despite the limited number of shows she's able
to compete in.
21
year old Erica Davidson (formerly Fuerst) is back
in the competitive scene with a new look and a new last name, and
should make waves in all her competitions in the coming year. And
finally, with a mentor like Tanji Johnson, younger sister Safiya
(19) has the guidance and genetics to make a name for herself in
the NPC fitness circuit.
With
competitors like the four mentioned above, the sport should be in
good hands for years to come.
Future
Oxygen/M&F Hers/something Cover Model Erica
Davidson
There
are people in the industry that are sometimes referred to as the
complete package. They've got the look, they've got the physique..
they've got it. But rarely do they display it at
such a young age, only a few years into the competition world.
However,
Erica Davidson is defying convention. With only
a few years of serious training under her belt, the 21 year old
is poised to take the fitness world by storm.. not only on the fitness
stage, but also as a fitness model.
Seriously,
if she is not on the cover of a magazine at some point in 2005 -
whether if be Oxygen, Hers, Kung-Fu World, Guns & Ammo or Better
Homes & Garden, I don't care - then there is something seriously
wrong in the world.
Make
it happen people.
Hot
New Look 20 Percenters
Not
sure what a "20 Percenter" is? Don't worry, because we
aren't exactly sure either. But according to new rules instituted
by the IFBB, it's the official new look for 2005 athletes who participate
in bodybuilding, fitness and figure.
What
the 20% refers to is a reduction in muscularity for all competitors
"whose physiques require the decrease regardless" of what
they compete in. Now, whether or not they plan on sending out notes
to girls saying, "P.S. - You're too buff", I don't know.
In
theory, the change can lead to many positives, but the way it's
been implemented is a little odd. If the IFBB had any foresight,
they could have adjusted their judging years ago and showed some
consistency in the placements and the type of physique that was
rewarded.
It
will be interesting to see whether or not the big name pros who
do display a decent amount of muscularity will infact be punished
with their placements if they retain the same look from 2004. If
you're entertained by placement rantings and ravings on message
boards, this is going to be a very fun year!

New Contest
Emerald
Cup Pro
Known
for years for being one of the best NPC shows west of the Mississippi,
the Emerald Cup is now adding a pro element to their normal festivities.
Brad and Elaine Craig run a first class competition, so the new
Emerald Cup Fitness show should be no different.
Known
for being a competition where numerous pros have passed through
in their NPC days, those athletes will now have a chance to step
on stage at the Emerald Cup once again.
The
Emerald Cup takes place in the Meydenbauer Center, Bellevue, WA
on April 29-30th.
